 THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE Once upon a time, there was a large pond in a forest. A tortoise lived in that pond. He spent most of his time in the pond, but sometimes he would come out and lie in the sun. A hare had his hole nearby. Being neighbors, they became friends. The hare was very proud of his speed. He thought none could defeat him in a race. He always laughed at the slow speed. of his Friend. At last the tortoise could not bear it anymore. One day, the tortoise asked the hare to run a race with him. The hare accepted the challenge. They agreed to run a race to a certain tree across the forest. Early next morning the race began. The hare ran as fast as he could. He was very swift and soon he was out of sight. When. he had covered more than half of the distance, he turned around and looked back. The tortoise was nowhere to be seen. By this ·time he had reached an area, where the green grass was growing. Green grass is one of his weaknesses. He began to eat it. Then he thought the tortoise was so slow. That he could not catch up with .him. So he lay down under the cool shade 0f a tree and soon fell fast asleep. In the meantime, the tortoise kept on creeping slowly but steadily. In. the way he saw the hare fast asleep. Although he was dead tired, yet he did not stop to take rest. When the hare woke up he looked back. It was almost sunset He could not see any sign of the tortoise. He thought that the tortoise was still far behind and ran asJast.as he could. But when he reached the winning post, he felt ashamed to see the tortoise sitting there. He had lost the race.   Moral: Slow and steady wins the race. |
