 THE GREEDY DOG (PRB.1977, 1980, 1982, 1992) Once upon a time there was a dog who felt very hungry. He wandered here and there in search of food but he could not. Find anything to eat. At last, he was very tired and hopeless. He sat down in front of a butcher's shop to take rest. He was looking at every passer-by. He thought someone might take pity oh him and threw a piece of meat towards him. But no such a kind-hearted person passed' that way. Since he could bear hunger no more, he decided to steal, A piece of meat from the butcher’s shop. He waited and waited till he got a chance. A large number of customers had gathered round the shop. The butcher was busy in cutting the meat and dealing with the customers. A piece of meat fell on the ground. He at once took it in his mouth and ran away to the jungle to save himself and the piece of meat. One his way he had cross a stream. When he had reached the middle of the bridge, he stopped for a while to look at the clear water flowing underneath. He saw his own shadow in it. He took this shadow for another dog with a very large piece of meat. He was not only foolish but also greedy. So he decided to snatch it away from him. He jumped into to the stream and barked to frighten the other dog. As soon as he opened his mouth, his own piece of meat fell down into the water. When his body touched the surface of the water the other dog also disappeared. In this way, he lost own a piece of meat and remained hungry. The Greedy Dog. |
