THE FOOLISH STAG

Once a stag came to drink water at a pond. As he looked below, he saw his own reflection in the clear water. He was delighted at the sight of his beautiful horns which were large and branching and glittered in the sun. He was full of praise for them. He thought of himself as the most superior creature of the forest.

But when he had quenched his thirst, he set his eyes on his thin legs and small feet. He thought they were ugly. He became sad .and started cursing them. He considered Himself to be very unlucky because of those legs and feet.

As he stood there thinking very sadly he heard hunter Blow a horn. He knew what it meant and saw a pack of hounds coming like the wind. He realized the danger and ran at full speed to save his life. It was his thin legs and ugly feet I that carried him away beyond .the reach of the hounds. The hunters and hounds were left far behind him. Soon, however, he entered a thick forest. Here the trees grew so closely together that his horns were soon caught among them, and he was forced to stop.

He tried his best to free himself but all in vain. Soon after that the dogs arrived and tore the helpless poor stag to pieces but, before his death, he, sorrowfully thought. of his foolishness, to admire and be proud of his horns which had proved to be the cause of his death, while his legs, with which he found fault, would have carried him away to safety.

Moral: All that glitters is not gold.
